Our Cause How We Started
"Men, their rights, and nothing more;
women, their rights, and nothing less"
- Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Our cause has been something we have believed in for awhile. We were started by American women who think that our breasts should not be considered shameful if they are publicly displayed. Rather it is our culture that has taught us this shame and embarrassment.
Our interest in this belief gained momentum from various public scandals. A well recognized one is the brouhaha over Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction which caused her to bare a breast during the Super Bowl halftime show. The vehement reaction and outrage by the conservative right was sickeningly overblown.
How many previous Super Bowls have members of the Rolling Stones pranced around topless and this is perfectly acceptable to society. However, the momentary blurry flash of a women’s breast sparked cries of moral outrage by parents who were dismayed over their children’s innocence ruined.
A simple woman’s breast should not be the cause of a searing image of horror. Women’s breasts are beautiful and are representative of giving subsistence to the next generation of humankind. It time for a cultural shift that would allow women to be more accepting of their bodies.
Our culture currently tells us that if an American woman bares her breasts in a public manner that it is subject matter for a Playboy magazine or for the dark corners of a gentleman’s strip club. Given this inbred attitude, is it any shock that a woman was removed from a Delta airline’s flight for breast feeding without covering herself?
W e think that a woman should be able to bare their breasts, if they so wish, in the light of day without fear of ridicule or condemnation. Men currently enjoy this right in American society. We think women should have an equal opportunity to enjoy this freedom.
